1916 54 Feet Owen Owen 'P' Class

A classic 'Gentleman's Racer,' BERNICE has a racing history and maintenance record second to none. Built in 1916 by the Hodgdon brothers in East Boothbay Maine to a custom design by the famous George Owen of MIT (Owen design #24, on record at MIT), BERNICE is, and has always been the fastest of the 'P' class racers, and has won EVERY trophy available on the Great Lakes! Originally built for a Boston owner, BERNICE and the rest of the 'P' Class racers were sold to the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in 1919, and BERNICE quickly proved to be the fastest of the class. Converted to her current Bermudan Yawl rig in 1925 (rig re-designed by George Owen), BERNICE has all the characteristics of racing yachts of her vintage. BERNICE's hull is characterized by long, needle-like overhangs (the waterline length is only 37'!), a substantial deep keel and wide transom, a powerful sail rig and Edwardian elegance in every appointment. There is no doubt that BERNICE is the single finest survivor of her class. BERNICE has always had her admirers, and the current owners/family has loved and used BERNICE for the past 30 years. BERNICE is original in virtually every aspect (she even retains her original 1916 dinghy!), although such things as a proper galley, an auxilliary engine and heads have been tastefully added over the years with the closest attention to limiting any changes in the original design, appointments and performance.
