This boat is built for world travel; the hull is one inch solid fiberglass at waterline, 1 3/16 near keel. It has a full keel with 9,000 lbs ballast, Edson steering, the mast (50’) and boom (18’) are aluminum (new) The hull is reinforced with vertical and horizontal ribs to insure prolonged structural integrity and prevent ‘oil canning’. The deck is constructed of ¾ and ½ inch marine grade plywood laminated together to total 1 ¼ encapsulated with West system, all joinery is done with a six inch scarf joint. There are twelve ports and three sea hatches, all Bow-mar.
The main salon is mid ship and done in Honduran mahogany, head room in main salon is 7’ 4”. The fresh water supply is built to use a bladder with 150-200 gallon capacity.
Possible trade for completed sail boat of similar length that is turn-key.
Features and Benefits
Project boat , needs completion.
I have been a carpenter for more than thirty years, in the early 90s I went to work with Hunter Scott custom boats in Pocasset, Ma where we built custom powerboats. There I did the carpentry on three 29’ Duffy pleasure boats that went out the door around $300k as well as two 44’ Duffys built for international travel, the 44’ boats finished just under a million each.
I also worked at two custom sailboat shops, Migrator Yachts in Wareham Ma I built three Block Island 40s, and these were also world class boats that retailed for just under $500k. And at European Custom Yachts I participated in the construction of one Swan 50’ sailboat.
Working independently I have totally remodeled one 29’ Bertram, a 36’ Pearson,
Building this Bruce Roberts sloop was not for profit; since the plan was to retire and spend the rest of my life on it. I have gone to great lengths to insure the highest quality possible. A man from Boston threw the hull and had the engine & transmission installed, the hull is solid fiberglass that is a full inch thick just below the waterline and slightly thicker near the keel. The keel is full length and molded with the hull rather than bolted on, it holds 9,000 lbs of ballast secured with epoxy. Everything below the waterline is sectioned off in compartments approx 20” x 40”, this is a safety measure in the event the hull should be breached to avoid flooding of the entire boat.
The deck is constructed of marine grade plywood, one layer 1/2” and one layer 3/8” marine grade plywood bonded with west system epoxy, the joinery is a 6” scarf joint. The entire deck and cabins are covered with three coats of west system followed by one layer of 10 oz fiberglass cloth and fared with epoxy and micro-balloons. The deck shelf is constructed of three layers of ¾” x 3 1/2 mahogany, the deck shelf is thru bolted to the hull with 5/16 bronze bolts every 8”, the plywood deck sheathing is bonded to the deck and fastened with 2 ½ inch bronze screws.
The bulkheads are ¾ inch marine plywood that are bonded to the ribs with fiberglass mat, all joints in the bulkheads are a six inch scarf joint.
The mast step is a laminate of four 1 ½ inch layers of ash resting on the keel and two keel webs. The mast compression post schedule 40, 6” 304 stainless steel with flanges on each end thru bolted to the mast step and cabin roof. The rudder post is a 2” 316 SS solid round bar with 3 3/8 X 2 inch tags welded to it. He lower rudder mount is 316 SS fitted with a bronze bushing and Delrin insert, the upper consists of a Delrin bushing and bronze stuffing box and is supported by a heavy tripod structure glassed to the hull. The steering system is Edson, complete from quadrant to pedestal including all pulleys, cables, idlers, steering wheel, and throttle & transmission controls.
The engine is a Vetus 62 hp diesel, fresh water cooled and is complete with the following; 2:1 reduction gear, CV joint, 316 prop shaft, lasdrop stuffing box, wiring harness, instruments, propeller, and wet exhaust, at this time the engine has approx 90 minutes total time (semi annual maintenance)
The mast is a 50’ aluminum mast with 18’ boom, the anchor wench is installed however I do not have the sail wenches or sails.
The understructure is constructed of mahogany sealed with epoxy and fastened with stainless steel screws and 3M 5200 marine adhesive.
The main cabin and head are trimmed with Honduran mahogany as well as the sole, the main salon is mostly finished, the V berth and captain’s quarters and shower still have work to be completed. I had selected Awl Grip royal blue for the hull paint, this is a very unforgiving color so last year I stripped the gel coat and sanded the hull to a very fare condition.
