| Description |
1929 Huiskens “HARMONY”â¨â¨The Harmony Pleasure yacht dates back to 1929 when the keel was laid at the Huiskens Boat Works on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan. The marine architect was John Hacker and the builder was Ben Huiskens. Two identical crafts were constructed, and only the Harmony remains. It has a length of 46 feet and a beam of 11 feet 11 inches and a gross weight of 26 tons. The craft sleeps 7 persons and has a gasoline fuel capacity of 180 gallons. It is equipped with twin Chrysler Gray Marine 350 cubic inch marine engines with two 20 inch propellers and cruising speeds of 14 miles per hour. Although the original owner is unknown it is said a well known Detroit, Michigan automobile family commissioned the pleasure craft in the summer of 1930 and began cruising the Great Lakes including Canada and The North Channel.â¨â¨ During the 1930’s the craft remained on the St. Clair River in Detroit, Michigan. It is known during it’s travels to have visited ports of Chicago, Mackinaw Island, Charlevoix, and many more on the Great Lakes. It is interesting to note that during World War II in 1942 “Harmony” was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard completely refurbished including the present marine twin engines. The craft was originally equipped with a single Kermath engine when new in 1929. After meeting the U.S. Coast Guard requirements, the ship was assigned to costal patrol and put into full service in 1943 guarding the waters from North Carolina to the Southern coats of Florida. The crew consisted of a captain engineer, navigator, and three deck hands. After World War II the ship was returned to the original owner and again became a pleasure craft at various Detroit area marinas. â¨â¨ In the late 1960’s it was then purchased by a family physician Dr. Blossom in Caro, Michigan and then sold to Mr. Weadock of Saginaw, Michigan and then purchased by Mr. Hackett also of Saginaw, Michigan, who replaced the entire hull of the craft at Brennan Marina in Bay City, Michigan. Mr. McDonald purchased the craft from Mr. Hackett in the summer of 1984.â¨ During the winter of 1985 and 1986 the craft was completely refurbished and updated with the latest marine technology. Also all varnished and painted areas were refinished, all metal trim re-chromed, engines updated including new shafts and propellers. Again in 1995/2005 the craft was completely refurbished and updated including topsides and hull sides. The Harmony is one of a kind, unique ship with a style and character that reflects the best of the early pleasure crafts on the Great Lakes. The Harmony ranks as the oldest craft in daily use on the Great Lakes and has many more years of service and memories to come.
