BROKERS REMARKS: Over 600 Morgan 38s of three different
types have been produced since the late 1960s.The first M-38, designed by
Charley Morgan and built by the company he founded in 1965, was in production
from 1969 through 1971. Approximately 80 of these fine keel-centerboarders were
built, and most are still sailing today. In the mid-1970s, the company (which
had passed out of Charley Morgan's hands) asked the well-known naval architect
Ted Brewer to design a racer-cruiser with a 30-foot waterline. That boat was
named the M-382. It had a long fin keel with a sturdy skeg-mounted rudder.
Approximately, three hundred were built between 1977 and 1981. In 1982, Morgan
made some changes to the rig and rudder, calling the modified boat the M-383.
The M-384, with further enhancements, followed a year later. About 100 of each
of these later models were built. In the mid-1980s, Catalina Yachts acquired
Morgan and during the 1990s has produced yet another M-38, this one a
center-cockpit, fin keel-spade rudder design. Approximately 60 of these vessels
have been produced. Three different designs. Three Morgan 38s. Three fine
boats. Especially with the older boats, owners have been busy these last few
years refurbishing, upgrading, and in some cases modifying them. This is a
perfect example of a “383”. “Spirit” is aptly named. Also reported by seller
that she was owned by the Chapman family (Chapman sailing) and sailed primarily
by Mrs.Chapman.
“Spirit” has made numerous coastal cruises as well having
double digit trips to Bahamas
and neighboring islands. The owners have now owned “Spirit” for just over ten
years being the third owner and now have decided to part with her. “Spirit” is
a part of their family and love of the water. They have decided to move to
other forms of enjoyment. Call anytime to see this excellent example of a
Morgan 383- “SPIRIT”.
