1938 45 Feet ExArmy ST Tug

Description

1938/2006 45’ x 12.5’ x 5' draft Steel Model Bow Tug

16-GRT, 11-NET

Welded steel, 1/4" plate

Blt. by American Steel Dredge at Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1938

Main engine is a 200-HP Detroit 6-71 diesel

4.5KW Koehler gas generator

Forward stairway from inside pilothouse down into lower level where bunks could be put in place

Keel cooled

12-Volt start and electronics system (new batteries and all new wiring)

Dry-docking inspection found hull to be PERFECT - smooth as glass, like-new steel

Completely rebuilt in October 2006 and the following was done:

- New Kahlenberg wheel 3-blade stainless - spare steel wheel also with tug

- Dry-docked, high-pressure water blast, and bottom coatings up to rub-rail with coal-tar epoxy modern equivalent.

- New zincs installed

- Rudder inspected

- New bearings shaft & rudder

- New fending bow to stern

- Hydraulic steering installed

- Tug completely gutted and rewired, replumbed, and new paneling in wheelhouse

- Sound-proofing in pilothouse (in and under) and interior finished off with plywood - tongue & groove paneling purchased but not yet put in wheelhouse.

- New radar unit installed

- Fuel tank vents removed and replaced in more convenient location

- Smoke stack piping replaced and raised 2-feet to keep smoke away from deck area

- New smoke stack vents

- All new interior, exterior and navigation lights

- New mast

- GPS installed (used unit but a nice one)

- Two radios installed (used take-outs from another tug, but good ones)

- New radio antennas

- New two-chime electric air horn

- New bell

- New modern deck hatches into fore & aft ballast tanks

- Three places under steering cover plates on deck were starting to rust through - these areas cropped and renewed

- Whole boat was repainted inside and out

- Fuel tanks cleaned and lines purged

- Old fuel filters removed and double racor's installed in their place

- Emergency fuel shut-offs installed as required by USCG

- Fuel fill pipe cut off and relocated inside boat - easy access by opening one port-hole (this meets the requirement of a containment)

- Bilge scrubbed clean - NO oil - boat is spotless

- Back bench rebuilt and buss heater installed in pilothouse run off engine's cooling water

- New cushions for back bench

- New gauge panel in wheelhouse including new gauges and they all work!

- New throttle controls and rigging

- Normally these tugs have a hatch on the engine room trunk and one in the pilothouse with a straight down vertical ladder to access engine room - these were eliminated and a new two-piece door cut into the stern on the port side with a stairway down into the engine room for safer and wider access

- A couple new pilothouse windows (which had been broken)

- Fire extinguishers, life jackets, ring buoys, first aid kit, and other USCG required fire & safety equipment added and up-to-date

- New steering wheel and electric control option

- New 4 man Viking liferaft

Tug is in beautiful "turn key" condition.  Great dredge tender or tug for light towing... she can handle loaded mud scows when dredging like nothing.  Tug has some good power for its size.

A note to those looking for a "toy" - this is a workboat with an engine room, ballast tanks and a pilothouse - very little room to install "quarters" - there's room for a couple bunks and maybe small galley area, but its SMALL down there.  Not a lot of room to spare.

Located near Sault Ste. Marie, MI

Price $69,900 USD
