UNDER ALL SEATS ARE STORAGE COMPARTMENTS. AFT OF THE BUNK IS THE CHART TABLE, SINCLE SIDE BAND AND VHF RADIOS. AFT OF THE CHART TABLE IS A SINGLE BUNK WITH STORAGE BELOW. ON THE STARBOARD SIDE THERE IS A SINGLE BUNK WITH STORAGE BELOW AND OUTBOARD AND ABOVE. AFT IS THE GALLEY WITH A TWO BURNER PROPANE STOVE, A SMALL SINK AND A LARGE ICE COOLER. Forward Cabin
FORWARD OF THE MAIN CABIN AND THE MAST IS THE HEAD WITH A TOILET. FORWARD OF THE HEAD THROUGH A DOOR ARE TWO BUNKS AND BELOW AND FORWARD OF THESE BUNKS ARE STORAGE SPACES, THE SAIL, CHANIN AND ROPE LOCKER. A LARGE HATCH OPENS TO THE DECK.
Engine
THE KAMPER 426 DIESEL ENGINE STARTS AND RUNS WELL PROPELLING THE BOAT AT 4 TO 5 KNOTS, DEPENDING ON THE WIND AND CURRENT. IT CAN BE EASILY SERVICED EITHER FROM THE MAIN CABIN OR DOWN THROUGH A HATCH IN THE COCKPIT INTO A LARGE SPACE BELOW. ONE FUEL TANK ABOVE THE ENGINE AND ONE BELOW PROVIDE A TOTAL OF 60 GALLONS OF DIESEL STORAGE CAPACITY. 12 VOLT DISTRIBUTION PANEL
Electrical
TWO 4D INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES PROVIDE ALL SHIPS POWER AND ARE CHARGED BY THE ENGINE DRIVEN GENERATOR. DC POWER IS FED INTO A 12 VOLT DC DISTRIBUTION PANEL THAT SUPPLIES THE SHIPS LIGHTING AND FANS. A 12 VOLT DC TO 12O VOLT AC INVERTER PROVIDES POWER TO DRIVE TOOLS. COMMUNICATION IS PROVIDED THROUGH A VHF RADIO AND AN ICOM M700 SINGLE SIDEBAND RADIO WITH AN AT120 TUNER THAT CONNECTS TO THE INSULATED BACKSTAY. ABOARD IS AN UNMOUNTED 12 VOLT REFRIGERATION COMPRESSOR AND 4 COLD PLATES

BACKSTAY HAS TWO INSULATORS FOR SSB ANTENNA. ALL SAILS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THERE ARE 2 HALYARD WINCHES, 1 STAYSAIL WINCH AND 2 GENOA WINCHES. ITS INTERIOR IS CRAFTED IN ONE INCH TEAK WHICH REMAINS IN AS-BUILT CONDITION, SHE IS FOR SALE 'AS IS', COMPLETE WITH A MASSIVE INVENTORY OF EQUIPMENT, PARTS AND TOOLS. THE GENERAL CONDITION OF EACH COMPONENT FOLLOWS: THE FOTOS SUBMITTED WERE TAKEN DURING THE LAST HAULOUT IN THE SUMMER OF 2005. THE HULL IS SOUND. THERE ARE NO LEAKS. Historical Background
THIS CLASSIC HISTORIC BOAT IS THE RESULT OF A DESIGNS THAT HEIN GARBERS CREATED AS HE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN HIS SAILBOAT DURING WORLD WAR II. UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE GERMAN NAVY, HEIN GARBERS, WITH A DANISH PASSPORT AND A DANISH FLAG ON HIS SAILBOAT, FERRIED GERMAN SPIES ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO ARGENTINA AND TO SOUTH AFRICA. AFTER THE WAR HE CAME UP WITH HIS "IDEAL DESIGN" FOR A COMFORTABLE OCEAN GOING SAILBOAT. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TONS OF WRAUGHT IRON SHEET ABANDONED IN YARDS THAT BUILT U-BOATS, HE BUILT 9 SAILBOATS. THIS IS HULL #3 LAUNCHED IN HAMBURG, GERMANY IN 1951 AND NAMED HER JANNE. A SECONF OWNER RENAMED THE BOAT ETMAL, WHICH MEANS 'COURSE' IN SWEDISH. LATER, PETER ADALBERG BOUGHT THE BOAT, RENAMED IT BONIFAZ III, AND SET SAIL FOR SOUTH AFRICA. ON THEIR RETURN VOYAGE LIFE AT SEA HAD LOST ITS CHARM AND WHILE PASSING THROUGH VNEZUELA IN 1976 SOLD IT TO FRED SCHUBERT WHO RENAMED IT TERESA. BOATLESS AFTER MY SHIPWRECK DURING 2000 IN NOVA SCOTIA, I BOUGHT THE BOAT IN MARCH 2001 AND SAILED IT TO SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, WHERE IT NOW LIES. NOT TO GO AGAINST TRADITION, I RENAMED IT PALLAS. SOON TO BE 80 YEARS OF AGE AND WITH MANY FRIENDS INSISTING I SAIL WITH THEM, I HAVE OPTED TO SELL MY BOAT.
Vessel Construction
THE HULL IS BUILT OF 7mm (9/32") WRAUGHT IRON WITH ROUND CHINES, FULLY RIVETED, and WITH A FULL KEEL. THE STEEL DECK IS WELDED TO THE HULL AND THE CABIN, MADE OF HEAVY TEAK PANELS, IS FASTENED TO THE DECK. THE FULL DECK AND THE CABIN ARE COVERED WITH FIBERGLASS. THE TILLER CONTROLS A FULL RUDDER SECURED TO THE KEEL. FOUR LARGE ZINC INGOTS ARE FASTENED TO THE HULL. PER YACHT CERTIFICATE # 0574 ISSUED BY THE GERMAN YACHT FEDERATION THIS SLOOP WAS BUILT BY HEIN GARBERS IN HAMBURG IN 1951 AND IS 12,30 M OVERALL LENGTH, 9,60 M AT THE WATERLINE, 3.22M BEAM, DRAFT OF 1.90M WITH A DISPLACEMENT OF 11.6 TONS. (THAT IS 40 FOOT OVERALL, 12 FOOT BEAM, 6 FOOT DRAFT, 13 TON DISPLACEMENT), THE CABIN INTERIOR IS CRAFTED IN ONE-INCH TEAK, WHICH REMAINS IN AS-BUILT CONDITION. NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE CABIN SINCE CONSTRUCTION

THIS VESSEL IS REGISTERED WITH THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD WITH ITS HOME PORT OF MIAMI, FLORIDA. PRESENT OWNERS OF THIS VESSEL ARE WILLIAM A. BUTLER AND HIS SON JAMES. C. BUTLER. THE BOAT IS NOW NAMED PALLAS AND LIES AT ANCHOR OFF SAN JUAN BAY MARINA AT THE NORTHEASTERN END OF SAN JUAN HARBOR. ALL SAILS AND AWNINGS HAVE BEEN STOWED FOR SAFEKEEPING.
Exterior. Deck, Cockpit, and Cabin,
AS NOTED ABOVE, THE DECK IS STEEL TOTALLY COVERED WITH A LAYER OF FIBERGLASS THAT ALSO COVERS THE WOODEN CABIN. STARTING FROM THE BOW, THERE IS A STAINLESS STEEL BOW PULPIT ATTACHED TO LIFE LINES THAT EXTEND TO THE STERN PULPIT. BOTH PULPITS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE LIFE LINES SHOULD BE REPLACED IN THE EVENT OF HEAVY WEATHER SAILING. A MANUAL ANCHOR WINDLASS IS HEAVY DUTY AND IS BOLTED TO THE STEEL DECK. THERE ARE TWO HEAVY DUTY CLEATES IN THE BOW AND TWO IN THE STERN. THE FORWARD HATCH IS A RECENT ADDITION. THE DINGHY AND THE LIFERAFT ARE WELL SECURED ABOVE THE CABIN. THE COCKPIT, WITH FULL FOLDING CUSHIONS, SEATS FOUR CREW COMFORTABLY AND SLEEPS TWO IF NEEDED. A HATCH IN THE COCKPIT LEADS TO A LARGE WORKING. BATTERY AND STORAGE AREA BELOW. A STERN HATCH PROVIDES ACCESS TO THE AFT END OF THE STORAGE AREA. THE PROPANE TANK IS SECURED TO THE AFT PULPIT AS AE THE TWO OUTBOARD ENGINES. THE SELF STEERING GEAR IN BOLTED ONTO THE STERN.
Cabin
FOTOGRAPHS PROVIDE A GENERAL PLAN OF THE CABIN. THERE ARE FIVE MAIN AREAS, STARTING FROM THE BOW.
BOW: AT THE FORWARD END THERE IS AN ENCLOSED STORAGE COMPARMENT THAT HOLDS ALL SPARE AND UNUSED SAILS, ANCHORS, CHAIN, ANCHOR LINES, AND A SCUBA AIR TANK. AT THE AFT END IS THE BOW CABIN CONSISTING OF ONE FULL SIZE BUNKS ON EACH SIDEWITH MATTRESSES. ABOVE THE BUNKS THERE ARE SMALL STORAGE BINS WITH DIVING GEAR, REFRIGERATION GEAR, ETC. UNDER EACH OF THE BUNKS THERE IS ABOUT ONE CUBIC METER (25FTSQ) OF STORAGE SPACE WHICH NOW IS FULL OF SPARE PARTS. WHEN NOT AT SEA BOTH OUTBOARD ENGINES ARE STOWED IN THE BOW COMPARTMENT.
HEAD: A SLIDING DOOR SEPARATES THE BOW COMPARTMENT. ON THE PORT SIDE THERE IS A MANUAL SEA WATER TOILET WITH NO HOLDING TANK. DRAIN VALVE IS CONVENIENTLY LOCATED AND IS MAINTAINED CLOSED. THERE ARE TWO SMALL SHELVES IN THE HEAD. BEHIND THE HEAD THERE IS A LARGE STORAGE COMPARTMENT THAT NOW CONTAINS CHARTS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES. THE MAST COMES THROUGH THE CABIN AND RESTS TO THE CENTER AFT OF THE HEAD. ON THE STARBOARD SIDE THERE IS A HANGING LOCKER. A SLIDING DOOR SEPARATES THE HEAD FROM THE MAIN CABIN.
MAIN CABIN: SEE PICTURES. TWO METER LONG BUNKS LINE EACH SIDE OF THE MAIN CABIN. ON THE PORT SIDE CENTER IS THE DINING TABLE WITH TWO LEAFS THAT CAN BE DROPPED AND CONVERTED INTO A DOUBLE BED. UNDER BOTH BUNKS THERE IS AMPLE STORAGE AREA. ABOVE EACH BUNK, AT EACH END, THERE ARE SMALL LOCKERS FOR STORAGE WHILE BETWEEN THEM ARE BOOK/MAGAZINE RACKS. BELOW THE CABIN FLOOR, IN THE BILGE, IS AN AMPLE STORAGE AREA FILLED WITH TOOLS AND SPARE PARTS. OVERHEAD THERE IS A DOUBLED PANED SKYLIGHT THAT OPEN HORIZONTALLY TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION
A BULKHED SEPARATES THE MAIN CABIN FROM THE
GALLEY: A FULL LENGTH CABINET TO STARBOARD HOLDS A GIMBALLED TWO BURNER PROPANE STOVE SET IN A STAINLESS STEEL BASIN. TO ITS RIGHT THERE IS A SMALL SINK. BEHIND AND BELOW ARE STORAGE AREAS FOR COOKING SUPPLIES. GOING AFT THERE IS A WELL INSULATED LARGE ICE COOLER CAPABLE OF HOLDING MORE THAN 10 BAGS OF ICE OUTBOARD OF THE COOLER ARE RACKS FOR PLATES AND SILVERWARE AND GLASSWARE.
ON THE PORT SIDE IS THE NAV TABLE WITH A LARGE DRAWER AND A SEAT THAT CONTAINS SAIL REPAIR TOOLS. THE VHF RADIO IS MOUNTED TO THE REAR OF THE TABLE. FORWARD OF THE TABLE IS A CABINET IN WHICH THE SINGLE SIDEBAND RADIO IS STOWED. AFT PF TJE NAV TABLE IS A FULL SIZE BUNK WITH MATTRESS. THERE IS A LARGE STORAGE AREA UNDER THE BUNK
BETWEEN THE GALLEY AND NAV TABLE LIES THE COMPANIONWAY CONSISTING OF THE ENGINE BOX AND TWO SETS OF STEPS THAT LEAD IN AND OUT. TO PORT OF THE COMPANIONWAY IS THE ELECTRICAL PANEL. ONCE THE STEPS AND ENGINE BOX ARE REMOVED THE ENGINE AND ITS ACCESSORIES ARE READILY ACCESSIBLE. BELOW IS THE DEEP BILGE WHERE ALL WATER COLLECTS TO BE EMPTIED BY A 12-VOLT AND/OR MANUAL PUMP. A 120-LITER DIESEL FUEL TANK LIES AFT OF THE BILGE. BULKHEADS ENCLOSE THE MAIN CABIN AND SEPARATE IT FROM
UNDERDECK STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE AREA: DROP DOWN FROM A HATCH IN THE COCKPIT LEADS TO A LARGE AREAD WITH TWO SEATS. IN THE CENTER IS THE ENGINE WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND DRIVE SHAFT DIRECTLY AT ONES FEET. TO STARBOARD IS THE MAIN SALT WATER INLET VALVE, THE MAIN ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION PANEL, ONE 4D 12-VOLT BATTERY. TO PORT RUNS THE INSULATED ENGINE EXHAUST SILENCER AND PIPING. A SECOND 12-VOLT 4D BATTERY LIES AFT OF THE SEAT. THE REMAINING LARGE STORAGE AREA THAT LEADS AFT CONTAINS A STEEL 170 LITER (40 GALLON) DIESEL FUEL TANK IS SECURED TOTHE DECK WITH A THRU DECK FILL HOLE, AN UNUSED 12 VOLT REFRIGERATIN SYSTEM, 4 COLD PLATES, A PROPANE GRILL, FISHING GEAR, ETC.
Fresh Water Supply
THE BOAT HAS NO INBOARD FRESH WATER SUPPLY. A LARGE PLASTIC CONTAINER, 30 GALLONS, IS FASTENED ON DECK AND FILLED. WATER FRO COOKING SI SIPHONED OFF WHEN NEEDED. A 'SUNSHOWER'IS FILLED FOR ON DECK BATHS. THIS SYSTEM HAS WORKED FOR MY CREW AND ME OVER THE YEARS. AN INBOARD FRESH WATER SYSTEM COULD BE INSTALLED WITH A 30 TO 40 GALLON RUBBER TANK PLACED UNDER THE PORT BUNK WITH A SMALL 12-VOLT PUMP SERVING WATER TO THE HEAD AND GALLEY. A PLSTIC DRAIN PAN COULD BE INSTALLED IN THE HEAD FOR SHOWERS WITH A DRAIN LEADING INTO THE GALLEY BILGE.
Salt Water Supply
ALL SALT WATER ENTERS THE HULL VIA ONE THRU HULL VALVE LOCATED ON THE STARBOATD SIDE UNDER THE COCKPIT. SALT WATER PASSES THRU A LARGE FILTER THEN SPLITS TO FEED THE ENGINE, THE GALLEY, AND HEAD.
Mast and Rigging
