An inexpensive cruiser and possible liveaboard, The Irwin 37 center cockpit ketch is perhaps best known as the precurser to the more famous Irwin 38. There are many similarities, but of course in this case, the boat is ketch-rigged. A lot of cruisers prefer the ketch rig because each of the sails are smaller and easier to handle than with the sloop/cutter, which is particularly important for short-handed sailing. As well, the ketch balances with virtually any combination of sails, and rather than reefing, simply dropping a sail is the general answer when the wind pipes up ('jib and jigger'). With two comfortable double cabins, each with ensuite heads and showers, plus two more berths available in the salon, the Irwin 37 is a fine solution for the cost-conscious cruising family. 'Summer Solstice is now in the water and ready to go, so please have a look at the photos (taken 05/11/05), and I am sure you will agree that the current owner has been at great pains to keep this vessel in good shape!
