VESSEL’S HISTORY

1948 - 1949. Built in northern Denmark in by Soren Larsen & Sons at
Nykobing Mors.
Constructed entirely of oak with oak outer planking on double oak
frames with an inner hull planking of oak.

1949 - 1972.Traded throughout the Baltic, British and European
ports carrying general cargo, timber & grain.

1978. Purchased in Colchester, England by Captain Tony Davies who assembled
a team of skilled shipwrights to commence the restoration work.

New decks, masts, yards and spars were made and she was entirely re-rigged as the late 19th century brigantine she is today.

1978 - 1982. The “Soren Larsen” was used in the BBC television
series "The Onedin Line" and other film work followed, including "The French Lieutenant's Woman","Count of Monte Cristo" and "Shackleton" - which involved sailing north to the Arctic Circle into the pack-ice of Greenland.

1982 - 1985. She was chartered to the Jubilee Sailing Trust UK, to
help pioneer a programmeof sail training for the physically disabled.

1987 – 1988 She was the Flagship for the Australian Bicentenary
re-enactment voyage of the First Fleet and led a fleet of eight Tall Ships on a 22,000 mile voyage from England to Australiavia Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, arriving in Sydney in January 1988.

1989.Sailed to New Zealand for the first time, to represent Britain in the 1990 Sequestry celebrations.

1991. Homeward round the Horn project - Australia to Europe voyage with 'Eye of the Wind'. Became the first British flagged tallship to round Cape Horn since
1936 during Southern Ocean voyage back to Europe.

1992.Won her class in the Transatlantic Tallship Race
via New York and Liverpoolduring the Columbus Grand Regatta.

1992 - 1993.Extensive refit and further restoration work in Britain. Voyage to Pacific waters via the Caribbean, Panama and the Galapagos.

1996.Major re-sheathing of hull with NZ Totara to
preserve the original oak planking.

Soren Larsen wins the Tourism Auckland Hauraki Gulf Development and Protection Award at the inaugural tourism awards.

Starts a southern hemisphere winter program where she cruises the barely accessible islands of the South Pacific.From November to April she sails the New Zealand coast, giving individuals the chance to experience the traditional square rig sailing and providing groups and companies with an opportunity tostage events aboard the ship.


1998 - 1999Soren Larsen sails the entire coast of New Zealand,
visiting Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Stewart Islandand is the centrepiece of Dunedin's 150th Anniversary celebrations.
The ship is honoured at the Tourism Auckland Annual Awards
winning the 'Adventure and Experience' Category


2000 – 2001 To celebrate the new Millennium, Soren Larsen undertook
a world voyage, the Global Odyssey 2000; Departing Auckland in March she sailed 30,000 miles to Britain viaUSA, Canada and Europe. The return voyage was via the Canaries, Caribbean, Panama Canal,Galapagos, Easter Island, Pitcairn and across the South Pacific returning home to Auckland New Zealand in October 2001.

2002 – 2011 Sail Training program continues with the southern hemisphere winter spent cruising the islands of the South Pacific and the New Zealand coast over the summer months.


CONSTRUCTION

Hull:

  • Carvel construction
  • Planking - Oak topsides and Oak to bottom of turn of Bilge
  • Bottom planking beneath Turn of bilge – Beech, thickness 3 ins planks.
  • Double Garboards of 4.5 ins thick.
  • Internal Oak keelson - 12ins by 12ins.
  • External Oak/beech keel - 12ins by 16ins approx.
  • Frames – Oak, Grown & sawn. Double frames, consisting of 2 of 6ins x
    7ins at deck, increasing to 2 of 6ins x 20ins approx at floor level, crossing keel spacing. 4ins between each pair.
  • Inner planking - (Ceiling) beam shelf, rider shelf and clamp, 10ins by
    5ins. Ceiling, 2½ins and 3ins.
  • Fastenings - Ferrous (Swedish Iron- Galvanised) through bolted, on
    every frame & spiked with ship nails as well.

Main Deck:

  • Traditional laid hardwood Iroko deck, approx 5 ins by 3 ins caulked
    and paid up with marine glue.
  • Raised aft quarter side decks.
  • 4 x 2 ½ Shengal hardwood deck.

Aft cabin:

  • Raised after cabin, planked in 2 inch Iroko which is caulked and paid up with
    Sika Flex deck compound.

Deck house:

  • Iroko framed with English Elm panels, varnished. Deckhead / Roof is marine ply,sheathed with Dynal cloth and resin.

Floors:

  • Wood

Keel bolts:

  • Galv mild steel. Due to construction not possible to withdraw.
    Apparently X-rayed in 1984 and found to be in excellent condition. Additional new keel bolts added in 1993 to fasten the new external steel keel. Done by T Neilson & co in Gloucester.

Deck fittings:

  • Galvanised eye bolts, fairleads, mooring bits
  • Galvanised Hawse pipes, Steel and roller guides to windlass gypsy.

Access to below decks is from the deck house that contains the galley
and dining area.

At the base of the stairs fwd is a large comfortable saloon with
cabins fwd and aft of the saloon.
In the fo’c’sle there are 6 berths, providing a total of 13 berths for
officers and permanent crew.
There is accommodation for 22 voyage crew in seven twin berth cabins
and two four berth cabins.
Some twin cabins have wash basins & vanity units, all draining to the
grey water tank.


The saloon is full width and finished with English Walnut panelling
with two large English elm
dining tables fitted, seating 24 at one sitting.There is also a small
dining table with bench seating
amidships, aft of the saloon as well. Access can be gained to the
engine room from the aft end of this area.


Cabins are provided for the Captain, First Officer and Engineer in the
after deck house.
This area also has a chart table and desk. This cabin has fwd access
to the engine and access to
the deck is by the wheel, aft.

Gearbox:

Direct drive, through wet clutch, turning 2 bladed variable pitch
propeller to give astern and ahead. (made by B & W Alpha diesel.) Hand operated clutch and V. P. control situated on deck by steering wheel.

Propellor:

Centre-line, 2 blade, variable pitch.

Oil pressure/temp/audible low pressure oil alarms/scavange pump air
