A Delight to Sail Handles Tracks and Turns Very Well - A Stable Sailboat in Rough Waters!
The Bruce Roberts Spray 28 has a long history and a great following. The Spray design includes Marconi sloop, cutter, ketch, schooner, Junk and Gaff rigs. They are constructed of steel, fiberglass (GRP), and wood. Most Sprays have been constructed to Bruce Roberts plans, and include Spray 22, Spray 27, Spray 28, Spray 33, Spray 36, Spray 40, and many variations of these. Several have been built in timber based on the original lines provided in Joshua Slocum's book "Sailing Alone around the World" and adapted by many, including Ken Slack in his book "In the Wake of the Spray".
In 1892 at the age of 51, Joshua Slocum was given a decrepit sloop called Spray and spent the next two years rebuilding this vessel. He removed the centerboard and replaced nearly every piece of timber in the hull, deck and superstructure. He sought to improve the seaworthiness by adding some freeboard, so that the boat would be better suited to the deep water sailing he obviously had in mind.
