What the experts have to say about the 2014 Cruisers Sport Series 275 Express:
The Cruisers Sport Series 275 Express is an upscale cruising boat with a beam of 8'6" (2.59 m) which makes it a trailerable cruiser -- sometimes called a "pocket cruiser''. She has an array of amenities that set the stage for an opulent experience on the water. The size and layout of the boat make her a versatile platform, equally comfortable for a day of watersports with the family, or over-nighting at a favorite destination. For those moving up from a sportboat, this could well be a stepping stone to something larger -- but, for many boaters, she has all of the amenities that will ever be needed for family boating.
- Dual Cockpit Entry. Much like a large motoryacht, the CSS 275 Express has both port and starboard side entries to her cockpit which is flush with the raised swim platform.
- Raised, Long Swim Platform. By raising the swim platform to the level of the cockpit deck, Cruisers Sport Series has eliminated a small step up that is invariable something that many people stumble going up or twist their ankle going down. By being long, the platform extends past the lower unit for safety and provides a large space for preparing for watersport activities. When getting underway, it will not drag in the water.
- Big Boat Construction. The 275 Express is built to the same standards that are in the large Cruisers Yachts models that currently range to 54' (16.5 m). For example, there are 7 layers of fiberglass in the 275 Express' hull just as there is in the company's 54-footer. We know of no other builder of boats this size that does that.
- Large Yacht Upholstery and Materials. Likewise, the CSS 275 interior, both in the cockpit and down below, are made with exactly the same fabrics, solid surface counter tops and upholstery as the company's large yachts.
- Imedge Gel Coat. The 275 Express has the same Imedge CCP gel coat as used in the large Cruisers Yachts. It is harder, has a deeper color, and better UV protection for longer color life. Not surprisingly, it costs 30% more than the gel coat typically used in class.
There comes a time for most people when it is time to step up from a bowrider, pontoon boat or small fishing boat and move into a cruising boat for expanded horizons. That is what the 275 Express is for. The adjustable sun lounge is at the center of the cockpit and provides a range of seating and lounging options.
3-Way Seat. The large, adjustable sun lounge is in the center of the cockpit and provides a transition to the aft swim platform. The lounge is comfortably cushioned and can be adjusted to a variety of positions. The lounge can be set up as a forward bench seat, or aft facing aft while at anchor, or laid flat to provide a large padded sundeck.
2-Way Chaise. The chaise seating to port opposite the helm is another good place to take the rays. Cruisers has thoughtfully installed angled back rests both facing forward and facing aft, so the seat is really two chaise seats in one.
Wet Bar. To port is a wet bar, equipped with a sink and room below for an optional refrigerator. Opposite is a fold up table that can be used to prepare sandwiches. To port is a standard wet bar and companion chaise lounge, while the cockpit table and helm are to starboard. Boaters who like to cook out might put a charcoal BBQ and an aftermarket rod holder in one of the gunwales.
Sporty Helm. The helm station has a dapper and performance-oriented feel. All controls are conveniently located and the large gauges are easy to read. Important switches like the horn are thoughtfully placed convenient to the steering wheel. Remote controls for the stereo and a 12V AC adapter are present. A 4" screen GPS system is optional, and would be located right in the middle of the instrument panel.
Helm Seating. The helm seat is wide and comfortably padded. A flip-up bolster provides a choice of seating and leaning options. The seat is adjustable forward and backward. The steering wheel is located in the middle of the doublewide seat -- so which side would the companion sit on? That's easy. The captain simply slides to the right next to the throttle and shift lever and steers with the left hand.
Going below we find an interior that is practical, versatile and well-executed. To port is the galley with a glass stovetop, refrigerator, sink and microwave oven up high, just where we like it. To starboard there is a fully enclosed wet head with a mirror, freshwater sink, and opening portlight.
Dining/Salon/Sleeping Cabin. Forward is the cozy U-shaped seating that triples as a salon, a dining room, and makes into a berth for two. To those who have never over-nighted on a boat with these accommodations, they may seem impractical and inconvenient. In fact, this is a rather standard arrangement on both power and sailboats in the mid-size range.
Atmosphere with Good Friends. Sitting around the table at night with a couple of candles and a good bottle of wine and a simple meal from the galley -- and good conversation! -- is frankly one of the great joys of any boater's life. And when the conversation wanes, or the wine runs out, the table can be easily cleared, lowered and transformed into a platform bed for two.
Mid Cabin. On the port side of the vessel behind the galley, is a passageway to the mid cabin, which like all boats in class, is located under the bridge deck. It is a double bed with one mattress and it can be easily crawled into. Some families put the kids here, others visa versa. This arrangement also makes it possible for two (well-acquainted) couples to cruise together.
The entire boat has a consistent upscale feel to it with a highly polished finish. From the aft swim platform to the head and cabin, the boat has the hardware, upholstery and finish work of a yacht. That is not an accident. As mentioned above, virtually all of the materials in the 275 Express are the same used in the Cruisers Yachts line, which stretches into million dollar yachts.
What we didn't mention above was the fact that the 275 Express -- and all of the other Cruisers Sport Series models -- are built in the same factory by the same people who build the million-dollar yachts. This is very good news for the consumer because it means that the attention to detail that the shop floor personnel have been trained to give to yachts will carry over to the smaller boats as well. We're told that as a result of this set-up more man-hours go into construction of each CSS boat.
The 275 Express is loaded with standard amenities and in fact most of the optional features are simply an upgraded version of what is already standard. A refrigerator, microwave oven, stereo, Bimini top, canvas cockpit cover, and trim tabs are some of the notable standard items. For many people the boat is turn-key as standard.
One of the advantages of the of the 275 Express is that she is powered by a single engine, something that saves expense both when buying and operating the boat. For most folks, we would recommend getting one of the higher horsepower engines available, something between 380-hp and 430-hp.
