Power Boat Guide Review

While the last of the original Hatteras 38 Convertibles was built some thirty years ago, used models remained popular well into the 1980s and many of these old boats are still in service today. While only two feet longer than the 36 Convertible (1969–77), the Hatteras 38’s interior, flybridge, and engine room dimensions are notably larger. The galley location is unique: arranged athwartships against the aft bulkhead, it’s convenient and opens up the salon considerably but severely restricts any view of the cockpit. The salon is fully paneled in teak or mahogany and features a standard lower helm and space for a sofa-bed and a couple of chairs. V-berths are located in the forward stateroom and stacked single berths are fitted in the guest cabin. Outside, the cockpit is on the smallish side although suitable for sportfishing activities. Note the absence of a transom door; the cockpit gunnels are low, however, so getting a fish aboard is easy. Topside, the flybridge has bench seating forward of the console and good cockpit visibility. Twin 280hp 8V53N diesels cruise the Hatteras 38 Convertible at 16 knots and reach 19–20 knots wide open.

About Hatteras Boat US Boat Reviews

Hatteras 38

By Jack Hornor

Revised by BoatUS editors in October 2012

The headquarters of Hatteras Yachts is located in New Bern, NC, not far from the cape of the same name that is reputed for it's treacherous seas and numerous wrecked ships. I am sure it was by no means coincidental that Hatteras'  founder, Willis Slane, chose this name for his new company. For a time, Hatteras used the slogan "Proven in the graveyard of the Atlantic" and pointed out in their advertising that every Hatteras hull design was tested in the treacherous waters of Cape Hatteras.

In the nearly 40 years since its founding, Hatteras Yachts has not only built a reputation for building yachts capable of withstanding punishing seas but, in the recreational marine business, the name Hatteras has become synonymous with high quality fiberglass motor yachts and sports fisherman.
