New on the market, this slightly used Ranger R - 25SC Tug is now available.   Purchased a short time ago, this one owner tug is in "As New" condition.  Approximately 35 hours logged.  Never slept on or really used in any way.  Owner is changing plans due to some health issues and is prepared to sell this little gem, which has all the options available and still the new boat look, smell and feel.  

This US built tug, the R - 25SC (Sport Cockpit) model has the aft deck / cockpit and is 25% larger than the original R - 25, therefore offering 50 square feet of aft deck space.   This boat was designed to be maximum comfort and ease of operation, yet a trailerable (no special permits) mini-yacht with comfort, space, good volume, great visibility and surprising interior and exterior spaces.  The hull is solid fiberglass and it has a keel, so it is basically a full displacement design, but it has some deadrise aft so it has semi-displacement characteristics.  Draft is only 26".  Bottom has a vinylester resin skin coat.  All Warranties will be passed on to the next owner.  Boat has a 5 year Warranty and the Volvo Diesel has a 2 year Warranty on it and a 3 year Warranty on all major parts.

The Ranger R -25SC is made to be a simple boat for owners to operate.  Remarkable design in that this model offers many features not commonly found in a boat this size.

This model can sleep 5 persons in 2 double berths and a single pilot berth that converts from the dinette.  Forward is the vee berth with filler and it is quite large.  Hatch above allows for light and ventilation.   Up a couple of stairs and you are in the Pilothouse with helm on starboard and unique folding seat(s) that convert from a dinette to a ample pilot berth in a few seconds; table raises and lowers hydraulically.  Across and behind the helm seat is the galley space with sink, stove top and when the helm seat is tilted forward, more counter space.  Below is the refrigerator and across on port, is the microwave.  Storage compartments are everywhere.  Farther aft on starboard is the Enclosed Head (headroom min. 6' 4") with basin, Jabsco head and stand up shower. Across from the head is a fold up partition that opens into a large storage area and this area also houses a double size mattress for sleeping, with shorter headroom.  Therefore, this 25' Tug can sleep 5 in 3 different areas; The 'hidden' or kid's double berth can be used for a great storage area.  

No one has ever slept in the berths and no cooking has taken place. As NEW.

Visibility is excellent and 360 degrees.    Headroom in the pilothouse is at least 6' 4" and forward where the helm seat(s) are, the headroom is 7'.   There are 4 hatches and opening windows.   If cruising, the entire crew or couple can have the privilege of seeing the entire view.  A door leading aft, opens to the cockpit which is larger than the typical Ranger 25 in that it is longer and offers 50 square feet of space, with seating and steps cleverly arranged.  The hatch to the engine compartment is in the center and access to the engine is exceptional.  Other cockpit sole hatches allow for easy access to all parts of the boat.   If one wanted, one would install a generator on the port side, as the space has been designed for that purpose.

In the aft end, a transom door allows access to the integrated swimstep, which holds cleats for a dinghy, built- in fenders aft and a hidden, but accessible swim ladder.  On the cabin top is where the instrumentation is installed, such as search light, radar, electronic antennas, and other gear.


Very cleverly designed Galley area aft of the Helm station consists of a Kenyon stove top burner, Nova Kool refrigerator with ice below the counter, a Frigidaire Microwave and a S/S sink. Fresh water, both hot (from 6 gal. heater) and cold (from 40 gal. tank).   Pleasant area with full visibility from the large windows offer the chef, 360 degree enjoyment.   The Helm seat lifts up and stays up for extra counter space when needed. There are also 4 overhead hatches to allow more ventilation.   Convenient storage spaces are built-in and ample for a 25' boat.  This boat has air-conditioning at the dock.  No generator so no A/C while underway, however, many of the R -25's have generators installed and one could easily be retrofitted, since the wiring and space are already allocated by the builder.

Electronics & Navigation

This "Pocket Cruiser" is designed for ease of operation.  A perfect boat for a couple wishing to travel the ICW and a tremendous choice for anyone aspiring to do The Loop.

Therefore, keeping with precedent with this Owner, the boat is fully equipped with a proper electronics package:

Garmin Charter Plotter 7612, 4Kw HDX Radar, GPS 740s, Depth Sounder, Speed Indicator, Ritchie Compass and Garmin VHF.  The boat has a Garmin Auto-Pilot and bow & stern thrusters for convenience.  Searchlight is mounted above the Pilothouse along with other antennas and equipment.  There is also a Fusion MS - IP700i Stereo / speaker system and Majestic Flat-Screen TV mounted in the Pilothouse. 

As you can read, this boat is fully equipped for convenience and safety at sea.

Engine and Mechanicals

The Ranger R -25SC is powered by a single Volvo D3 - 150 diesel.  Volvo's Penta new D3 has been developed using the latest available engine technology.  The D3 -150 is specially designed for displacement and semi-displacement hulls. The lower cruising rpm gives quiet operation and lower vibrations.   This engine has a common rail configuration with piezo-electric injectors.  The controls are equipped with Volvo Penta EVC- EC electronic shift control and throttle.   This engine was introduced in 2013. It is a 4 stroke engine of 5 cylinders.  Max engine speed is 3000 rpm's and it produces 150 Hp.  

Brochure states that this boat has a max speed of 19 - 21 kts. depending on weight and sea conditions.   Owner is not a speed type, but he said the boat consumes approximately 7 gphr. at 16 kts., which is a fast cruise speed.  At 8-10 kts. the fuel consumption is minimal. 

This D3 - 150 has approximately 35 hours logged.

This boat has both Bow and Stern thrusters, with remote control.  It also has Trim- Tabs for adjusting the attitude of the boat in variable sea conditions.

The R -25SC has both AC and DC electrical systems.

AC is currently supplied via a 50' shore power cable accepting typical 115V power, 30 amp.   (A 2.7 Kw generator with Sound Shield, can be added in needed.  The builder has designed the spaces to accommodate a diesel generator and all the planning is in place if desired).

DC is supplied via 4 AGM batteries ( $650 upgrade), with charging relays & switch panel. Battery charger, 20 amp,  115/230V, 3 Bank.

Deck & Equipment

The Ranger R- 25SC has safe, fully protected Walkaround Decks.  Outboard S/S railings and inboard mounted hand holds are installed.

Lewmar Anchor Windlass with Helm & Foredeck controls, with Anchor package;  16.5# Anchor, 50' HT chain, 200' nylon rode.  (Never used).  Anchor bow roller.

Bimini Top with boot ($2,620 Option),  Transom platform rails with gate to stern swimstep (($720 Option).   Boat has a complete USCG Safety Package (flares, etc.)

Cockpit model is sure to please any newcomer.  The R -25SC is the Sport Cockpit Model. 50 sq. ft. more space than it's predecessor.  This makes for easy lounging, relaxing, dining outside, cocktail cruising, fishing, etc.  Seats are cleverly arranged and access to bilges and storage areas is very easy.   In the center of the cockpit is a large hatch which accesses the Volvo Diesel.  Access is easy and having the engine outside of the cabin make for a more quiet environment inside. Seats have built-in storage.  

Window Covers and Bimini Top with boot.   Covers are  Phifertex window material in lieu of Sunbrella.   Pilothouse roof top is ideal for storing kayaks and other gear for excursions and adventures.


This Ranger R -25SC is a large, small boat.   Designed to meet the requirements of a couple or small family, or two couples looking to do some cruising with ease of operation. Perfect for going up and down The Ditch (ICW) or traveling The Loop.   Perfect answer to folks that are transitioning from a sailboat to power and yet do not want to be relegated to 7 kts. speed.   Economical and fun, yet offering incredible design for comfort and a fair amount of privacy.

Hull design is very well done.   Although the hull has a keel, it also has a ample amount of deadrise aft, so it offers some soft-riding when the seas kick up.  Solid fiberglass hull and built very tough (in the USA).  

Owner reluctantly is selling after only 35 hours logged.  Change happens and this is his wish.  Great opportunity to get in on a great boat that is actually better than new, because it has been "shaken down" and detailed.  All Warranties will be passed on to the next owner.  Boat has a 5 year Warranty and the Volvo Diesel has a 2 year Warranty on it and a 3 year Warranty on all major parts.
