He came pretty darn close. In theory the boat can achieve 92 miles per hour. Eighty-five miles an hour is as fast as the owner has been able to go before he runs out of space on a local lake. "It's a fast boat. And it gets a ton of looks," the owner says. The current owner bought this 2003 Donzi 22 Classic from the original owner a few years ago. In 2010 he, a friend, and a mechanic started replacing and upgrading every feature on the boat they could think of. When they finished in March 2012, they had a Mercury Racer 502 inboard-outboard motor that now cranks to 580 horsepower. (Compare that to the previous 514 horsepower, before the upgrades.) The upholstery is new. The carpet is new. The MerCruiser Bravo One drive is new. The gauges and electronics are high-class. The stereo system is new and high-class. Throw away book value when it comes to this boat. Comparative values of other Donzis also aren't worth that much. That's because this boat has features not dreamed of by the people who put together boat values on a mass scale --- starting with the custom rebuilt engine that looks brand new and has less than 10 hours on it since it was finished in the spring of 2012. The owner and his friends went top-of-the-line on every feature they came upon. "Once we get into a project, what's just the best of the best? We didn't stop," the owner states. The only mistake he made, the owner says, is adding up the cost of all the parts he bought during the past two years. The total is about $77,000, he says. He knows he can't get back anywhere near the value he has put into this boat by selling it. But with a son at an expensive college, he has decided to sell this beauty t help ease the financial burden of higher education. "All the toys must go," he says. The boat comes with a 2003 EZ Loader trailer that looks to be in terrific shape. As of September 2012 the boat is being stored on the trailer in a warehouse and under a boat cover.
