General Details

The MK III was one of Ted Irwin's next generation of sailing yachts, incorporating practical feedback and ideas from Irwin Owner's, something Ted was famous for, and supported by the latest fiberglass and boat building technology of her time.

The MK III's hull is a one-piece fiberglass unit using alternate hand laid layers of 24oz woven roving and reinforced with additional laminate in high stress areas to create a very solid hull construction.

This MK III is a full keel, shoal draft (4'), making her a perfect fit for island hopping in Florida and the Bahamas. She can skinny up to almost any anchorage to avoid the elements.

Her deck is a single piece fiberglass unit with marine plywood core for stiffening and insulation, covered by non skid surfaces in designated areas. Her spacious center cockpit is self bailing with recessed drains and her sails can be managed from the cockpit with roller furling jib and main.

Her Ketch rigged masts and booms are anodized aluminum with integral sail track and air foil aluminum spreaders, and her rigging is stainless steel. with forged turnbuckles and toggles.

On deck forward is a teak wood pulpit and anchor roller and chain locker, with manual windlass. Her anchor is a 60# plow with 150' chain and 100' line.

Stantions 360 degrees with webbing keep gear and passengers secure. Aft of the cockpit is a large recessed lazarette for storage, the Mizzen Mast, dinghy davits and a solar panel system for charging the 12V system.

On her stern is an excellent aluminum platform with retractable swim ladder. The custom platform is top notch, extremely sturdy and quite large in size, making ingress and egress a breeze when hopping in the dinghy.

Her comfortable and roomy cockpit is covered by a large bimini with zip-in or roll-up Eisenglass surround. Removable wheel opens the cockpit area for relaxing and dining under the stars. Custom cushions and pillows create a fantastic area for sunsets and hanging on the hook.

Ergonomics abound, with wenches and lines at your finger tips, Yanmar engine monitoring system, Binnacle compass, LED cockpit lighting, and a nice array of electronics including Raymarine Auto Pilot (functions perfectly) Garmin GPS and Hummingbird depth.

Down below she is a two stateroom layout.

V berth forward with head/shower wand/stainless basin, all new port holes throughout (top end and nicely done) hanging locker, overhead hatch, and teak accents.

The main Salon has opposing settees, fold down dining table, nav station, galley to starboard with stove, oven, microwave, and holding plate fridge/freezer.

Engine access is very good with hinged fold away hood that reveals the entire top of the engine for service. Filters easy to reach. Her fuel and water tanks are located beneath the salon floor and very easy to access and/or replace. All look good currently. This boat has had an additional water tank added beneath the V berth bringing her water capacity to 150 gallons.

Aft is the master stateroom with nice double berth plus a single berth. Teak hanging locker and drawers, storage, head and shower with wand. Hatch over head and all new port holes with screens.

Specifications

Condition
A very nice representation of Ted Irwin's MKIII 37 and in good condition considering her age. A few items stand out. First, the recently installed Yanmar 39 HP diesel is fresh and starts with the tap of a key. 495 hours. Looks clean and new. Second, her shoal draft makes her a very desirable cruiser. Third, her rigging, masts, all look recently tuned and are in fair to good condition. Fourth, her cockpit is very spacious and comfortable for long durations of time on the hook and cruising. Other areas of note: Her davit is a little light weight, but it functions well. Not designed for anything heavier than a light inflatable, but is serviceable. The wood mounting plates are deteriorated and need replaced with aluminum plates. Her swim platform is outstanding. Windlass is old and a manual unit. One house battery need replaced and is dragging the 12V down. Teak could use a sanding and recoating. Her fuel tank appears to be galvanized steel. Very little sign of rust, but should be checked out. Good news is it's a breeze to remove due to it's location beneath the removable salon floor. A few of the deck hatches could use some attention or replacement. Some are recently replaced and look good. Several of the other larger hatches are original, do not leak, but show signs of distress. We did not hoist the sails, so we do not have an assessment of the sail inventory condition, but owners are sailing her frequently and report no issues, and they are covered by canvas and out of the sun. She could use a haul out and bottom job. Last bottom job 2010. Diver cleans bottom every couple of months, so growth is not out of control. All in all. A nice boat with great accommodations. NO AC, Gen.
