Matthews Wooden Boat building company started out in Branscomb, Ohio, back in the late 1800s, where Scott J. Matthews, aside his father’s sawmill, developed some of the early hulls. Over the course of the next 50 years The Company created everything from small runabouts to rumrunners for the government, to military craft, and of course the luxury yachts that they are most renowned for.
During their heyday many influential people like the Ringling Brothers of circus fame and Ernest Hemingway owned a Matthews. This particular Matthews 42’ has design elements that span the commuter yacht, flybridge, sportfish, and cruiser designs. She has been routinely maintained by her current owner and is equipped with galley, two cabins, and separate head and shower. Solidly constructed of White Oak keel and frames with Philippine Mahogny planking, she easily is a testimonial to the old “they don’t build ‘em like they used to” quote granddad used say.
Powered by dependable 4-71 Detroit Diesels she will cruise nicely at a comfortable 14 knots or, at your leisure, just throttle back and enjoy watching the world go by – life on the water in style you could say. Standing at the helm of this classic with the wheel in hand, one feels free, connected to the past, but oddly open to whatever the future holds. Showings are by appointment only.
