General Details

Pilgrim, the stunning 44’ 1991 Alden 44 MKII diesel auxiliary cutter, is now for sale in Old Lyme Connecticut.

This Alden 44 is the embodiment of the concept of a blue water cruiser. You will have seen her distinctive Star and Stripes blue hull, gleaming bright work, clean lines in Newport or Bermuda, or knocking about Buzzard’s Bay. Her current owner has had her out stretching her legs on New England cruises and Bermuda Races these past 9 years. She is entirely up to snuff and ready to set off for the  Caribbean,  the Bahamas, or Penobscot Bay at a moment’s notice.  The hydraulic centerboard allows a less than 5 ft draft so those thin water anchorages in the Chesapeake or Bahamas are entirely in reach. The cutter rig with removable stay sail stay allows for great performance under shortened sail when appropriate, or for a tall, wind finding rig when the winds are light. 24,000 lbs displacement with 10,000 lbs ballast and a 34’ water line give good solid performance powered by the 950 sq ft sail area. To put it bluntly, she is heavy enough and long enough to punch through the in shore chop or the off shore swell and stay dry at the same time.

First and foremost, Pilgrim is an Alden. Built by Tillotson-Pearson in Rhode Island in 1991, Pilgrim is the most recent Alden 44 built. The gelcoat is vinylester resin and four coats of epoxy to thwart those nasty blisters.  The hull is unidirectional fiberglass with a vacuum bagged balsa core and great foam cored stringers running the entire length for incredible strength and rigidity. Alden is Alden, the top of the line when it comes to construction and design. The Alden 44 is outlined in Ferenc Mate’s definitive work, “The World’s Best Sailboats”, pages 19 to 30, where he recognizes the integrity and workmanship that go into Alden yachts in general and the Alden 44 specifically.

Pligrim is exceptionally equipped and laid out for short-handed sailing. A perfect size for a couple to comfortably sail for a weekend or a month or an extended cruise;  sail trimming including reefing is all managed from the security of the cockpit. The massive self-tailing #32 Barient electric winches make light work of short tacking the roller furling 135% working genoa.  The full-battened mainsail with three jiffy reefing points is sheeted to the traveler on the cabin top and leads direct to a #25 self tailing Barient in the cockpit.  The main halyard as well leads to a #24 self tailing Barient. The backstay, the main boom vang, and the centerboard are all operated from the Navtec Hydraulic station, again in the cockpit. And to make life even easier, the RayMarine auto pilot is the silent, never tiring crewmember. Pilgrim is equipped for a passage with only a couple on board.

The sail inventory is in 100% top condition all the way from the storm trysail to the 135% light Genoa or the asymmetrical spinnaker. The entire mast and standing rigging was replaced in 2008 in preparation for extended ocean racing and cruising. No expense has been spared in maintaining and upgrading every aspect of this beautiful yacht.

Below is tastefully decorated with wonderful teak and cherry cabinetry and joiner work. The full width salon offers comfortable seating. To port is a cushioned settee / pull out bunk with storage below and behind. To starboard is a U-shaped dinette that converts to a double berth, again with storage below and behind.  There is a gorgeous custom drop leaf dining table which may be removed for racing.

The owner’s cabin is forward with an offset double berth to starboard, with drawers and storage beneath. The L-shaped settee to port has storage beneath and behind. There is a four drawer bureau with a cedar lined hanging locker, and a custom writing desk pulls out from under the berth. The guest cabin is aft to port with a comfortable double berth and teak bureau with three drawers.

The head can be accessed from the main salon or the forward cabin and has a separate stall shower and plenty of locker doors and storage. Of course there is hot and cold water in the sink.

The galley is perfectly equipped for preparing meals off shore or at anchor in a remote harbor. The propane fired Mariner Regal 3 burner stove and oven is gimbaled for safety at sea. The large freezer is top opening and holds plenty for a trans oceanic voyage. The refrigerator is top and side opening for easy access should the need for a frosty beer strike you suddenly. Of course the Grunnert refrigeration is AC/DC or engine driven depending upon your passage. The corian countertops and deep sink are exactly what you would expect on a yacht of this caliber. And do not dismiss the galley clips and harness if things get a little rough.

Mechanically, Pilgrim is again what you would expect in a quality yacht. The Yanmar 4JH TE turbo 57 hp diesel with a vee drive has been heavily maintained and reliable under all conditions. The Westerbeke 7.5 KW generator is as well maintained and easily able to handle any on board load whether air conditioning or heating, or just pushing the microwave. As you would expect, there is a 3 bank Professional Mariner 30/50 battery charger for quick charges and the Heart interface EMS inverter for slower demand. Or simply plug her in at the dock with two 30 amp shore power plugs.  The six gallon water heater is run off the 110 circuits, generator or shore power, and off the engine.

Pilgrim is truly a classy lady, beautiful both inside and out. She is extremely well equipped for in shore and off shore sailing. Nothing needs to be done to sail her away from her mooring tomorrow morning and embark upon your cruise of a life time.  Do not miss this opportunity to own this magnificent yacht, truly one of the 100 best sailing yachts out there.
