General Details

Here is a 1979 37 ft Gulfstar aft cockpit cutter powered with a Perkins 4-108 diesel (2003 – est 200hrs) located in Clinton, CT. The aft cockpit 37 is by far Gulfstar’s most prolific design.  Vince Lazzara is the designer of record; remarkably Gulfstar built a 151 of these hulls between 1976 and 1979. The Gulfstar aft cockpit cutter is well configured as a rugged blue water cruiser or a comfortable coastal family cruiser with her heavy displacement, full keel, and flexible rig. Here is a sailing yacht you can comfortably cruise the bays or Maine, or voyage to Bermuda or the Caribbean.  With the split headsails, you are able to sail extreme weather, or set the 135% genoa and lazily coast the New England shore. This boat can do it all.

On deck, the aft cockpit with cushions is large enough to seat the whole crew and guests combined. The Edson binnacle with stainless steel wheel is all the way aft. A dodger and separate bimini which can be bridged provide moderate protection from the elements and sun. This is a very comfortable cruising cockpit. Wide side decks lead forward along the full trunk cabin to the fore deck. The forestaysail is clubfooted with a breakable stay that can stow out of the way. The 135% genoa is on a roller furler for easy setting.

The below space and finish are just what you would expect in properly laid out cruiser. The galley design is excellent, extra large, twin galley stainless steel sinks are centerline to avoid filling when on a heel. The capacious refrigerator with a freezer compartment along the after bulkhead is top load to preserve the temperature.  The shipmate CNG range stove and cooktop is to port. There is ample storage in the bank of drawers under the counters. To starboard of the galley is the navigation station sporting the navigation equipment and a good size chart table with the proverbial chart drawer beneath. The convenient swing out navigator’s seat stows out of the way. The settees on either side of the centerline table pull out to make wide berths. There are pilot berths out board of the main settees.  There are two good size hanging lockers opposite the good size head compartment. The V berth area is designed to be closed off from the rest of the boat. Headroom is 6’3” or better. Storage capacity is remarkable for a yacht of this size. There is a teak and holly sole and beautiful teak joinery and custom cabinets throughout.

This Gulfstar 37 cutter is a serious boat for the serious cruising sailor. Take her up the coast to Maine for the season, and then south for the winter. This boat will do it all in comfort and safety. Big enough to live aboard, but small enough to comfortably double hand, this is an ideal boat for the cruising family. The present owner owns a 50 master license with sail endorsement; he has set the yacht up to his exacting standard.
