Additional Equipment

Donzi’s enticingly beautiful 38 ZX is both wide and deep, boasting over six feet of headroom in the cabin. But size alone does not luxury high performance make. This beamy offshore boat is fast!

Tied to the pier, the 38 ZX looks like a performance yacht. Make no mistake about it, Donzi is proud of this machine and their logo is well-pronounced.

With a 9 '3" beam, the 38 ZX is approximately 9 inches wider than most boats in its class. We consider it to be a performance boat that makes sense. You can eat, sleep, entertain and walk around in the cabin. Try doing that with other 38-foot offshore boats.

Luxuries include white upholstery, large storage compartments located below the seats and pads, a hanging clothes locker, stand-up private salon/dining area and a seven-foot-long V-berth. The galley comes with stove, microwave, sink and refrigerator. It’s bright too, with two translucent deck hatches that let light in whether open or closed. Too hot? The air conditioner will cool you down fast.

The cockpit also benefits by the extra girth. The aft bench seats four, rather than the usual three, passengers. Operator and companion are treated to adjustable electric bolster seats and power footrests. Aft standing passengers have stainless steel grab-bars securely fastened to the bolsters, and the aft bench has headrests for upper-back support.

Coolers have been installed under the bench and port-

Side console functional stowage in the cockpit. The dash, however, is very well-engineered, with Gaffrig instrumentation grouped by engine, spanning the tachometers and speedometer.

Under the soft yet supportive sun-padded hatch lie twin HP 500 EFI?s with Bravo performance drives from Mercury Racing, considered the standard these days for reliable offshore power.

In fact, the Donzi 38 ZX pulled out a top-end speed of 75.3 mph at 5,100 rpm. The twin step, aft-ventilated Z-Tech hull has a 22-degree deadrise at the transom. Wide chines, strakes and eight-inch running pad help balance the boat when trimmed high, and helps it track with accuracy through the turns.

Accelerating to plane in 5.8 seconds with tabs level, not completely down, the boat keeps its bow low, yet the depth of the cockpit and height of the deck requires one to maintain good posture for optimum visibility. The 500 EFI?s have great mid-range power and the Donzi would pull from 0 to 50 mph in 12 seconds, approximately the same time it took to accelerate from 40 to 70 mph.

Running 60 mph at 4,300 rpm seemed effortless. With tab adjustments, the hull ran straight as a die.

The 38 ZX slaloms nicely at cruising speeds and completes wide-radius turns without difficulty, strimmed level or slightly negative.

Construction highlights include Plexus bonded hull and deck joints, vacuum-bagged balsa core in the hullsides, a cockpit liner and Divinycell closed-cell foam coring of bulkheads, stringers and the transom. Donzi?s 38 ZX is built tough?to be driven hard.

Founded in Miami in 1964, and located today in Sarasota, Florida, Donzi boats employees nearly 300 workers and produces over 25 fiberglass powerboat models from 16 to 43 feet. Donzi boats is a division of American Marine Holdings, which also includes Pro Line, a market leader of recreational saltwater fishing boats from 17 to 35 feet; and AMH Government Services, which offers customized Donzi boats and Pro-Line vessels for government and military applications worldwide.

At the 2006 Miami International Boat Show, Donzi boats introduced the fourth addition to the ZR family: a hot new 27-footer. The 27 ZR was a welcome entry in the under-$100,000 performance boat market with its sleek styling, superior fit and finish and unbeatable performance thanks to its advanced running surface.

Also at Miami, Donzi boats announced a partnership with legendary auto racer and designer Carroll Shelby, and unveiled the 22 Shelby GT. The first-ever boat to wear the Shelby name, the 22 Shelby GT is highly specialized derivative of Donzi’s venerable 22 Classic. With automotive-inspired touches throughout, plus blistering performance thanks to its special engine hatch and raised x-dimension, the 22 Shelby GT outsold all other Classics combined during its first ten months of production.

In 1965, Donzi boats partnered with Abercrombie & Fitch. In 2006, it was Armani Exchange. Giorgio Armani was attracted to Donzi’s distinctive style and impeccable reputation, and chose a Donzi boats as the centerpiece of the Spring 2006 Armani Exchange ad campaign. The Donzi Armani ads, showcasing a 22 Classic shot on location in Baja California, Mexico, ran for three months straight in over 30 major print publications. The actual boat used in the shoot was then transported back to New York City where it was displayed inside Armani Exchange’s flagship store in SoHo.

The long-awaited Miami Vice movie hits theatres

Through special agreement with Universal Studios and director Michael Mann, Donzi boats was proclaimed the “Official Boat of Miami Vice,” and three Donzi boat models were featured in the film: a 38 ZF, a 38 ZR, and a 43 ZR. Prior to the movie’s release, Donzi boats launched an ambitious media campaign touting its involvement in Miami Vice. Donzi’s Miami Vice ads ran in all major boating publications, and Donzi boats made headlines in USA Today, the Baltimore Sun, the Miami Herald, and several boating magazines.

After a series of twelve open-ocean endurance races in five countries against in international field of competitors, a Donzi 38 ZR won the 2006 P1 Powerboat UIM”Evolution Class” World Championship.

The final two races of the 2006 season were held in the Atlantic at Cascais, Portugal. Donzi boats won and proved that in rough water conditions, a Donzi boat is still the boat to beat.

Today, with ranging from 16’ to 43’, Donzi boats produces a more diverse range of boats than at any prior point in its history. What’s more, each of today’s Donzis has been designed and is built with the company’s original mandate of outstanding performance, quality construction, and enduring style. Over 40 years since its birth, Donzi Boats continues to expand its horizons and build on its hard-earned reputation as an innovator. Whether winning tournaments with the acclaimed ZF models, stirring nostalgia with a Sweet 16 that’s virtually identical to its 1964 predecessor, or pushing the performance envelope with its new ZR series, Donzi Boats are leading the pack today just like it was in 1964. Some things never change!
