General Details

Once in a great while, a true offshore sailing yacht is offered with state-of-the-art construction techniques and equipment. TABU was designed and built by a couple who have cruised over 250,000 offshore sea miles.  Having built two previous offshore sail boats, they know what works and what doesn’t. Although TABU has voyaged to South America and multiple trips to Mexico, she is in remarkably good condition, a testament to the owners’ detailed attention to maintenance.  Every aspect of TABU’s design and layout was aimed at creating a comfortable, safe passagemaker that can easily be sailed by two.  The Farr design offers exceptional performance on all points of sail and clicks off the miles better than many heavier offshore designs.  Now offered for the first time, fully found and ready for new adventures.

Accommodations
V-BERTH, SEA BERTH & HEAD:  The V-berth opens to allow access to a large sail stowage area underneath for sails.  There are (3) drawers built into the front and a privacy curtain. There is a large sea berth just aft of the fore cabin to port, with abundant storage beneath, including a storage locker just over the foot of this berth. Just across from the large sea berth is the head with a Baby Blake toilet, perhaps one of the most reliable, dependable heads ever produced. SALON & GALLEY:  The salon is well designed and very functional with a pilot berth outboard to port and comfortable u-shape settee and table to starboard.   The lockers behind the settee store the stereo and built-in storage for glassware and refreshments. The sea-going galley is aft to starboard and set up for use all sea conditions.  Large top-loading refer and freezers are aft.  The Force 10 stove top includes custom pot rails. Also, a nice addition to the galley, are two large drawers that hold fruit and vegetables right at hand. The trash bin is accessed just outside the galley so there is no need to disturb the cook. Pots and pans live in a lift-up locker to the left of the stove. AFT CABIN/NAV STATION:  The Nav Station and equipment are at the forward end of the port aft cabin.  The use of carbon fiber at the Nav Station for panels gives it a modern feel. The chart table is large enough to spread out an Admiralty chart full size and there is also room inside for about 100 charts. There is a dedicated, heated foul weather locker aft of the pilot berth. Next aft is a generous quarter berth with stowage. This berth is the main at-sea berth. It is convenient to the cockpit.  It also has 3 opening ports, 1 facing aft to observe the boat’s wake. There are B&G multifunction instruments mounted on the overhead at the forward end of the bunk to monitor conditions both at sea and at anchor. MECHANICS:  The engine is accessed both from lifting the companionway stairs at the front and thru the starboard side via the large lazarette hatch in the cockpit ON DECK:  TABU’s 59” wheel and Jeffa rudder bearings make steering a dream. The oversized wheel is set into a carbon fiber wheel well allowing the helmsperson to steer while sitting on port or starboard cockpit coaming. The foam-cored seat along the back is easily removed in port but gives a great sense of security at sea. The pulpits are all custom titanium and the stern pulpits have built-in flag/rod holders and attachments for blocks. The mainsheet and traveler are controlled through the use of custom coaming blocks with lock-offs so the secondary winches can be used for either one or switched to trimming a spinnaker or tension the runners. There is a large lazarette for stowing dinghy, fenders, docklines , etc. The refrigeration control mechanics are all readily accessed here as well as the engine, water pumps and steering system. The T-shaped cockpit is laid out to easily double-hand but is large enough to accommodate a full crew or happy hour with friends. Space is cleverly maximized to include a self-draining propane locker and a life raft storage well which is recessed in the cockpit sole. The foredeck self-draining bow locker was originally designed to be the chain locker but is now a great location for outboard fuel and anchor snubber, helping to keep the deck clean and simple.

Construction
Triple planked, cold molded, West System epoxy; mahogany over yellow cedar.  Laminated yellow cedar tapered frames (7 ¼” at keel to 2 1/8” at nominal centers). Superstructure: 12mm Joubert ply, BS 1088 Okume epoxy coated, glued and fastened.  Rudder foam cored w/fiberglass sheathing and aluminum rudder post w/internal web frame.
