Dare to be different. Sail a yacht that will turn every head in every harbor in the Northeast. Imagine yourself swinging at anchor, lounging on the after deck of this “Forest Gump” Louisiana Shrimper.
Caillou Pride is an adventure waiting for you and your family. AT 59 feet, this 1977 steel hull Louisiana shrimp boat has shed her dragging gear but still retains her magnificent sheer and the grace that the artists in Bayou Petit Caillou first envisioned in 1977. She maintains her heritage as a workboat/shrimp trawler even after her conversion to a live aboard yacht now moored in the Connecticut River.
The current owner bought Caillou Pride as a working shrimp boat in 2005 and had a Louisiana yard strip away most of the fishing gear and convert the fish and forward holds to simple staterooms. The pilot house supports the interior living space as well as the galley, the head, the helm station, and an additional bunk. The after deck, with a full awning is where most of the living is done aboard. While there is nothing grandiose about Caillou Pride and her conversion to a yacht, one does have to appreciate the scale of the appointments on board. The forward stateroom was the former living space for the entire crew. The amidships stateroom was the fish hold for the vessel, but now is a double stateroom with acres of deck space. The engine room under the pilot house is cavernous and swallows the twin 6-71 Diesels and 20 KW 3-71 generator with hardly a burp. This vessel carries 2200 gallons of fuel and 1200 gallons of water as her normal complement. The after deck can literally accommodate 35 people at a stand up cocktail party. There is nothing cramped about this boat.
Fully inspected, surveyed, ultrasounded , every perceived steel issue was cut out or otherwise repaired during the 2005 conversion. The steel decks are topped with fiberglass. This hard chine beauty was built for a tough industry in shallow water or deep. The full keel and protective skegs around each of the 44” bronze propellers are reminders of Caillou Pride’s commercial pedigree.
While calling this yacht a live aboard, which is the present owner’s goal, there is nothing what so ever tying this lady to the pier. The twin Detroit 6-71 diesels push this 40 ton “Cleopatra of the Oceans” at a stately 8 knots. The industrial sized 20 KW generator supplies enough juice to run anything you can imagine. Certain systems such as lights and navigation are converted to the ships 12 volt system to ease the dependence on the 110 v power.
While there is nothing overly fancy about this yacht, she is clean, well maintained, and functions nicely as a home away from home. There is plenty of room for the next owner to further convert or modify this fine lady to fulfill new dreams. If you enjoy a streak or whimsy or unconventionality, take a close look at Caillou Pride. She is not an ordinary yacht.
