General Details

For sale, 23 ft Pearson Ensign hull number 510 in Clinton CT.

Hull 510 is a fine older lady built in 1964, and raced actively up to 2011. Ensigns are exceptional family racer cruisers embodying the classic traditions of the golden age of sailboat racing.

Designed by Carl Alberg, Pearson Yachts of Portsmouth, Rhode Island built Ensigns from 1962 to 1983. They manufactured 1775 boats. The Ensign was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 2002

The Ensign Class Association promotes Ensign Class racing under uniform One-Design rules to maintain competitiveness while controlling costs. Ensigns are the largest class of full-keeled, one-design sailboats in the United States.  Its popularity, rather than declining with the advent of very high performance boats, has been on a major upswing. We have one of the strongest national organizations and support fleets from the East Coast through the Rocky Mountains. The Ensign Association declares, “The Ensign, designed by Carl Alberg, is the best family Daysailer/racer ever. The Ensign is The leader in the art of small boat sailing/racing, Safe, Stable, Handles like a larger full keel boat, Large roomy cockpit, 3 foot keel, 3,000 pounds displacement, 1,200 pounds of ballast, Classic, traditional characteristics, One-design specifications.”

This boat was finished out in teak, the original woodwork is in good condition but in serious need of refinishing. The hull and decks have been painted, and it is time for a new coat. The original classic Merriman winches are still mounted, adding a bit of classic elegance. Stainless standing rigging still employ the original bronze turnbuckles. There is a great deal to like about this boat.

The mainsail is older but serviceable while the new Genoa is barely used. The spinnaker and classic wood spinnaker pole are original. Auxiliary Power is a Johnson Seahorse long shaft 8 Horse power from the early 1990’s which is recently serviced and runs well.

Here is a great opportunity for someone handy with sandpaper and a paint brush to refinish this classic Ensign at an introductory price.
