2021 Galati G120 Signature Hargrave
Many serial yacht owners form a close relationship with their broker in the course of buying and selling numerous vessels over the years. That’s the case with the owner of Catera, the new Galati G120 Signature Series by Hargrave, which debuted at the 2019 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.
“The owner is like a relative,” said Carmine Galati, principal, Galati Yacht Sales. “This is a 45-year customer who has done over 30 boats with us.”
The 120-foot megayacht is the result of a collaboration between the owner (who was looking to move up to a larger boat), Galati Yacht Sales and Hargrave Custom Yachts. The hull design was by naval architect Jack Sarin, and Shelly DiCondina of Yacht Interiors by Shelley styled the interior. The owner’s captain served as project manager during the yacht’s construction. Carmine Galati describes this highly experienced team as “the perfect storm.”
The owner and the design team set a series of specific parameters for the new G120 Signature Series project, which the finished boat ably reflects. The draft had to be 6 feet or less—it ended up at 5’10”. Cruise speed was spec’d at 20 knots and top end at 25 knots, supplied by twin 16V MTU main engines. Fuel capacity was set at 7,000 gallons for extended voyages. “That’s 20 percent more than usual,” Galati said.
According to the brief, the main deck needed to have full walkaround side decks without sacrificing interior space for the salon, dining area and country kitchen forward. “You typically have to go to the 40-meter class to get the walkarounds,” Galati said. However, Jack Sarin gave the G120 a 25-foot beam in order to provide enough space.
The social spaces on board are optimized for entertainment and relaxation. The flybridge has a dining area for 12, a bar and the requisite Jacuzzi. There is a convenient day head tucked into one of the wings supporting the hardtop. The boat deck, which is a step down, holds a grill, a RIB tender with a davit and also has room for a Jet Ski.
The raised pilothouse provides an elegant spot for viewing the waters ahead while the yacht is under way. On the lower deck, the open salon and dining area are lined with large windows and the furniture is designed to facilitate uninterrupted views of the sea. Forward, the country kitchen allows the owners or guests to cook and dine together “en famille.”
The G120 has five staterooms on the lower deck, including a full-beam VIP with a king-sized berth and a full-beam master suite with a private stairway from the salon. The fuel tank serves as a buffer between the engine room and the master, part of the extensive sound-suppression system specified for the yacht. “We’re extremely sound-sensitive,” Galati said. “Every single pump, everything operational is inside the engine room.”
Knowing that the secret to a happy owner is a happy crew, the crew quarters were designed to house three separate staterooms.
So how did the first formal collaboration between Galati Yacht Sales and Hargrave Custom Yachts turn out? “I’m ecstatic. I love it,” Galati said. —Louisa Beckett
